Here it is, my first blogpost on my self-titled website. Though my website URL may speak for itself, I believe introductions are in order. So, the first thing you already know about me; my name is Abigail Earline Hintzen (my middle name I am proud to say I share with my mother). But beyond my name, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself before I explain my reason for starting this blog.

Born and raised in Suriname to parents of Guyanese descent. I grew up in a happy, multilingual, and through and through Caribbean home.

My friends and family would describe me as a people’s person. I pride myself on being an open-minded person, I have always believed in the power of human connection, and that we can always try to have a positive impact on the people we end up meeting, however small that may be.

In addition to studying, I love to bake and cook as you can tell I am a huge foodie! Writing, going on trips, exploring, and traveling to other countries. Growing up, I have always had a special place in my heart for volunteering in hospitals and shadowing doctors in order to learn what life as a physician would be.

I am full of gratitude for the upbringing I had full of warmth, laughter and friendship, because it has not only defined my sense of self, but also what I believe to be my purpose in life.

I knew upon graduating from my high school Christian Liberty Academy that I wanted to become a doctor. I wanted to study medicine because one thing that always stood out to me from those medical shows I grew up watching, was that I saw my love for people, the medicines mommy would always have in our home for when we were ill, and the wellbeing of my fellow man represented in an industry. Therefore, I knew even back then, medicine it was. Moreover, medicine it became.

I am medical student studying at one of the best medical universities in Havana, Cuba. Though I say so myself, I have had to jump many hurdles that have come along my way since being able to call myself that. Hurdles that I, once again, have only been able to surpass through the kindness of other people who have helped me to get where I am today.

Which brings me to my reason for starting this blog. I want to share my thoughts, expressions, and perspective on being a medical student and the journey that has led up to it. For one, it would serve as an outlet for me to express those thoughts and experiences. However, the reason I want to do this publicly, is simply so that it may inspire others. In the hope that my story may resonate with future and current medical students.

I hope to create a platform whereby myself and other individuals can bring about awareness and share the opinions and views on things.

Yours truly,
